Snata Fe Playhouse

Upcoming events at the Santa Fe Playhouse –

A Feast of Friends, an evening of music and poetry will be presented as a benefit for the Santa Fe Playhouse on Sunday, May 27 at 7:00 pm.  Admission is “Pay What You Wish” and tickets will be sold at the door.  Pieces performed will include the works of local poets as well as works by Shelly, Baudelaire, Leonard Cohen, Neruda and others.  Performers include Christopher Clements, Lori Romero, Glenna Hill, Clara Soister, Vivian Darden, Jonathan Hill, Tom Romero and Annie Goodwin.

Trio de los Bailes will appear in concert at the Santa Fe Playhouse on Friday, April 1 at 8pm.  Tickets are $15.00 general admission.  Call 988-4262 to reserve tickets.  Members of Trio de los Bailes include Margaret Armstrong on Violin, Eddie Hernandez on Guitar and Mary Outten on Accordion.  Trio de los Bailes plays music which has accompanied dances in New Mexico since the 1700’s.  Much of this music originated in Europe and came to the Rio Grande region along the Camino Real and the Santa Fe Trail; other tunes originated in New Mexico.  Fiddlers have passed these melodies down through generations in Northern New Mexico.  This is a special opportunity to experience this unique folk music in a formal stage setting.

“Bailes were field in every town or village, in salas with whitewashed walls lit by tallow candles.  Before 1850 most of the salas had hard packed clay floors with wheat straw scattered over them to keep the dust down. On a table at one end of the sala were chairs for the musicos who played violin and guitar. Often, before the dance, the musicos would ride in a wagon through the town and issue a convite, an invitation for everyone to come to the dance.      –  Anita Gonzales Thomas from Traditional Folk Dances of New Mexico
